Classic Malhamdale
Did you know:
· Malham Cove was once the UK’s Niagara Falls?
· Janet’s Foss is said to be the home of a fairy queen?
· Malham Tarn inspired Charles Kingsley’s ‘The Water Babies’?
No visit to the Dales is complete without taking on this absolute classic, full of hidden secrets both real and fantastical!
Starting from picturesque Malham itself, our route crosses beautiful wildflower meadows and woodland before reaching Janet’s Foss, our first waterfall. From here we visit the awesome Gordale Scar and admire its dramatic geological features. Our route then takes us above the scar via a sharp but fairly short climb and away from the main path for an amazing bird’s-eye view. From here we cross moorland to Malham Tarn, the highest lake in England. Our descent takes us down the ‘dry valley’ to Malham Cove where we have the opportunity to view this incredible feature from both the top and bottom and find out how the limestone pavement was formed along with the various cave systems below our feet.
A short walk brings us back to Malham where a number of pubs and cafes await us!
7.6 miles (12.3km) with 1250 feet (385m) of ascent and descent.
Please be aware that wet limestone can be very slippery and some of our paths are rough. We will take it steady but appropriate footwear should be worn and you may find poles useful.
Public transport is available from Skipton to Malham, with both bus and rail connections at Skipton: http://www.dalesbus.org
