Guided Yorkshire Three Peaks
|
If you’re looking for a proper challenge – perhaps for a special charity – this is the walk for you.
One of the nation’s favourite long distance walks, we cross three of the highest peaks in Yorkshire in a continuous 24 mile loop with 5,200 feet of ascent in total – that’s 1,600 metres. If you can do it in 12 hours it's considered a fast time, but we aim to simply complete this epic day out safely and enjoyably! After a kit check and introduction, we start walking from Horton-in Ribblesdale around 7.30am. We will head straight up Pen-y-ghent, one of Yorkshire’s most iconic silhouettes, before descending moorland to Ribblehead. After passing directly alongside the iconic Ribblehead viaduct (perhaps via the snack van!) we then follow the Settle-Carlisle railway line for a while before diverting off to Yorkshire’s highest point, Whernside, at 736m above sea level. From here we have fantastic views of our third and final peak: Ingleborough. We drop back down to valley level where on a weekend a special walker’s café is available. After a short sharp climb onto Ingleborough’s ‘hill fort’ summit and some of the best 360 degree views in the country, we begin the steady descent down through limestone pavement back to Horton-in-Ribblesdale where the café and pubs await our weary but satisfied bones! |
24 miles (39km) with 5200 feet (1600m) of ascent and descent.
It is vital that suitable footwear, spare warm clothing and waterproofs are brought on this walk, along with sufficient food and drink for an energetic 12-hour day.
There are pubs and public transport from both valley stops in between peaks back to Horton-in-Ribblesdale, if any group member wishes to withdraw from the challenge, and your guide will of course be carrying all the necessary safety equipment.
There is a range of accommodation in the Horton-in-Ribblesdale area and it is served by the Settle-Carlisle Railway with regular departures direct from Leeds.
Yorkshire Three Peaks too much? Try the Wharfedale Two Peaks (13 miles) or the Nidderdale High Way (18 miles)!
