Mystical Wensleydale: Druid's Temple, Leighton Reservoir & Wild Ilton Moor
NEXT WALK: SUNDAY 8TH JUNE
Discover the mystical, historical and wild romantic aspects of the Ilton area...
We begin on a high by visiting the Druid’s Temple, a stone circle hidden in the woods, and clear up the puzzle of its mysterious origins. Next come Leighton and its reservoir, via fields, woodland and stream. We circle one side of the reservoir before crossing the dam of its sister, Roundhill. From here it’s up, up and away onto the remote Bronte-esque moorland above Leighton. It’s not difficult to imagine Cathy and Heathcliff enjoying this wild landscape complete with rocky crags and far-reaching views. We then descend gradually back to the Bivouac where the beautiful cafe awaits!
9.5 miles (15km) with 1300 feet (400m) of ascent and descent. A couple of short steep climbs but most of the ascent and descent is gradual.
This walk covers a variety of terrain including muddy and rough sections so walking boots should be worn. We also cross remote and exposed moorland where the weather may be different to the valley so waterproofs, spare warm clothing, hats and gloves should be carried at all times of year.
